The copyright for all material on GERG’s sites is owned by GERG unless otherwise stated. It is protected by a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND) license.

Why do we do this? Not to stop you disseminating what you find here, but to make sure you can. Creative Commons Licensing preserves open, public access to material that might otherwise be exploited commercially in such a way as to prevent you sharing it. You can share anything on GERG’s websites with anybody you want. However there are some restrictions, necessary to preserve the scholarly character of the work.

1. You must acknowledge where it came from.
2. You can’t alter it
3. You can’t make money from it in its original form, but you can, in agreement with us, develop it for commercial purposes

You can of course quote from it, but the three provisions above still hold. This is to protect the authenticity of what’s on our site and the reputation of the people that write for us.

Can you buy or sell what you find on our site? Not in its original form. We recognise that people need to make money; we just don’t want that to restrict access to what’s on our site. So, you can develop or modify what you find here provided we license you to do so. If you want to produce an anthology, a compilation, or some completely new product such as a MOOC, that’s find and you can copyright the result, and sell it. But we have to reach an agreement with you about how that will be done, and we have to protect the open-access character of the original material.

A grey area is what’s called ‘fair use’ in the publications industry. You can quote from material you find on our site, or translate it, and incorporate the result into stuff that you sell, such as books or journals, up to 10% of the total. These things can usually be worked out in sensible discussions so get in touch.

GERG and this website is of course a work in progress, so if you’ve got any comments, suggestions, or questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
